The creator will start working on the movie sequel later this year

Downton Abbey show creator Julian Fellowes has confirmed that he will begin penning a sequel movie ‘later this year’.

Given what we know about production deadlines, that would put a Downton Abbey 2 release date towards the end of 2021 or early 2022.

Fellowes confirmed the news at the recent Television Critics Association press tour event, saying that he would be returning to the world of the Crawleys and the Talbots later on in the year.

Before that, however, he will be focusing on HBO’s new period drama series The Gilded Age.

When jokingly asked by a reporter when the second film would come out, Fellowes responded saying, “Give us a break gov. Not until I’ve finished the scripts for The Gilded Age.”

HBO’s new series will star Christine Baranski, Amanda Peet and Cynthia Nixon. It is currently in pre-production, with filming destined to start this summer.

It’s not just Fellowes who is looking forward to delving back into Downton Abby. A majority of the Downton Abbey cast has said in interviews that they would be delighted to return to real-life Downton Abbey – Highclere Castle in Hampshire, England – to begin filming a second film.
