A countdown of some of the biggest highlights from the Golden Globes

Awards season has begun, and later today will see A-Listers take to the Red Carpet for the season’s first big show: The Golden Globes

British comedian Ricky Gervais is back to host the gala, a fact that might make some of the event’s Hollywood audience uncomfortable.

Gervais scathing remarks about some of the world’s biggest stars always draws awkward laughter from inside The Beverly Hilton but entertains audiences around the world. This will be the fifth time Gervais will play host.

Ahead of tonight’s festivities (well, technically tomorrow morning’s – the event will be live from 5 AM Dubai Time right here) we’ve put together a list of our favourite moments throughout the years.

George Clooney gets upstaged

In 2015, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler poked fun at George Clooney and his new wife Amal.

“Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, was an adviser to Kofi Annan regarding Syria, and was selected for a three-person UN commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip,” Fey said.

“So tonight… her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.”

Emma Thompson loses her shoes

Emma Thomspon sauntered up to the stage back in 2014 wearing a pair of Christian Louboutin heels and a drink in hand. After speaking about the award – best screenplay – the actress removed her shoes and lobbed them over her head.

“I just want you to know, this red, it’s my blood,” she said before throwing the offending items.

Oprah calls for a ‘new day’ for women’s rights

Just months after the Harvey Weinstein scandal, Oprah used her lifetime achievement award speech at the Globes in 2018 to call for a “new day” for women and girls facing abuse from men.

“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men,” Winfrey said to a standing ovation.

“But their time is up! Their time is up!”

Angelina Jolie jumps in the pool

Angelina Jolie made a splashback in 1999 by jumping into the pool at the Beverly Hilton. She also pulled a journalist with her.

The actress said before the awards that should she win she would dive into the pool and stayed true to her word.

Every Ricky Gervais opening monologue

It’s obvious that the British comedian doesn’t pander to his live audience during The Golden Globes. Instead, he chooses to entertain the millions watching at home by poking fun – sometimes to groans and boos from his friends in Hollywood – at many A-listers.

Previously, he has poked fun at the Kim Kardashian, Caitlyn Jenner, Mel Gibson and a lot more.
