Marvel is releasing a scary superhero film next year, so how scary are we talking?
As any living, breathing human would know by now, Disney+ is bring with it a slew of new, original content. An excitable chunk of that content is the next phase of Marvel. With Halloween around the corner, we thought we’d talk about Marvel’s first ever scary film coming up next year (2020).
The MCU does a lot of things, it has the special effects, humour, amazing casting, big budgets, action. You name it, Marvel films have it. Apart from horror that is, this fact however could soon change.
One of the hallmarks of the DC films and comics these days is that they are a bit darker, a bit grittier and a bit more scary. The Dark Knight trilogy for example had some seriously sinister baddies and some rather visceral moments. All the bad guys in the trilogies were way scarier than anything in the MCU. In a similar note, Joker has made headlines for being one of the most chilling superhero/villain films ever, so bad in fact that people had to leave screenings.
Marvel however will next year enter this market as it is reported its Doctor Strange film will be rather scary.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, according to its director Scott Derrickson, will be “the first scary MCU film.” reports Deadline.

It’s not clear just how spooky we’re talking here, Derrickson has previously directed horrors such as Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, so it could be a bit darker than we’re used to with our plucky superhero films.
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios boss, assured everyone that “It’s gonna be PG-13 and you’re going to like it.” Benedict Cumberbatch himself then added that “I think it’s vital to maintain the humour of the first film, but with this twist of horror.”
There aren’t many details floating around on the film itself just yet. We know that Cumberbatch will return as Doctor Strange and that the film will tie in with the Disney+ TV show WandaVision in some way.
The release date for the film is currently May 7, 2021.
