Venom was released last October to a mixed critical response, but a resounding public success.
The Tom Hardy-led superhero flick became the seventh-highest grossing film of the year and took more than US$850 million worldwide. A sequel is already in the works, and it’s scheduled to hit screens sometime late next year.
The question on everyone’s minds: will Spider-Man make an appearance?
Well, according to the director of the first Venom Film, it’s only a matter of time before the duo cross paths.
According to Ruben Fleisher, “That’s where it’s all going to lead, and that’s the exciting thing because we changed the origin of Venom… in the comics, he evolved from Spider-Man but because of the Marvel-Sony thing we weren’t able to that. And so the thing I think it’s building towards, and will be exciting to see, is when they actually do confront each other.”
Whether or not this confrontation happens in the next Venom film or a future film, we won’t know.
But we do know that Tom Hardy will once again play Eddie Brock in the sequel, as Sony boss Amy Pascal confirmed in July: “I can say that Tom Hardy will be back, magnificently playing that character as no one else can.”
Andy Serkis will be taking over the director’s chair for the sequel, which is set to also star Woody Harrelson as the Marvel baddie Carnage.
