The One Where The World’s Tallest Building Lit Up

‘Friends’, the most famous sitcom of all time (sorry Seinfeld), turned 25 this month. The entire world is celebrating the show’s birthday, and Dubai did so in extravagant fashion.

In case you need yet another sobering reminder of how old you’re getting, the very first episode of Friends aired on September 22, 1993, and ended a full decade later in 2003. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its inception, Dubai went full force ahead.

Dubai often uses one of its most famous buildings, the Burj Khalifa, as a canvas for celebrations throughout the year. The world’s tallest building can be lit up in an infinite number of ways, from the KSA flag to celebrate Saudi Arabia Day, to the French flag in a show of solidarity. Recently however, the Burj rocked the iconic Friends logo across its near one kilometre high front.

On September 22, the Burj became its own light show, synchronised with the Dubai Fountains. The Burj’s lights varied from the famous Friends colours, to call-backs from the show including lobsters, turkeys wearing sunglasses, and of course a piping hot cup of coffee.

The light show synced up with the Fountains as it played the Friends theme tune, which is now stuck in your head. I’ll Be There For You by The Rembrandts was sung by everyone watching the performance.

If you missed out on the show, you can still show your love towards the show here in Dubai. The Central Perk couch, though in a different material from the one on the show, is currently sitting just by The Dubai Fountain. The pop-up set also includes the table similar to the one in the show and the rug. It will stay there till Wednesday October 16.

Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox, Matt le Blanc and David Schwimmer all took to Instagram recently to share memories on the 236-episode show.

Could we ‘BE’ any more nostalgic?
