Details on the upcoming Batman reboot trilogy are scarce, we have little more to grapplehook onto than Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. Numerous sources are now pointing to Jonah Hill joining the cast.
Considering The Batman isn’t set for release till mid-2021, Matt Reeves, the director, has a lot of time to get together a stellar cast and a gripping plot. Rumours floating around range from Nicki Minaj as Catwoman to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker making an appearance. The latest rumour, Jonah Hill set to play a villain, holds some weight.
Two-time Oscar nominee Jonah Hill is in talks about playing a villain character in the upcoming reboot Deadline reports. Sadly there’s little more to go on, so we’re going to talk about Batman characters for a bit.
Within the long cinematic and theatrical history of Batman, a whole host of its iconic comic books villains have appeared. The Joker, obviously, but also Mr Freeze, Bane, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and the Penguin.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first film in the new trilogy is likely to have both Penguin and Catwoman. Unless we’re going to see Jonah Hill slide into some slimming latex, our money is on him being in talks to play Penguin.
Penguin is rooted a bit more in reality than other Batman villains, he doesn’t have a freeze ray or the ability to jump into your nightmares, he just has a snappy sense of style. Where the Joker is the ‘Clown Prince of Crime’, Penguin is the ‘Gentleman of Crime’. He’s a Gotham City mobster who runs a lot of the criminal happenings in the city. He uses his Iceberg Lounge club as a cover and front for all his activities. Unlike other criminals, Penguin is described as sane and in control of his actions, giving him a different kind of relationship to Batman than other baddies.
The craziest thing about The Penguin? He has a mechanical umbrella he uses as a weapon. Trust us when we say, if Pattinson dressed as a suave billionaire wouldn’t draw us in already, Hill in a tuxedo fighting Batman with an umbrella surely will.
The Batman is slated for a June 25, 2021 release.
