Surely not.

Disney’s D23 gave us a lot to talk about, from Marvel, to Pixar, to National Geographic, to of course, Star Wars. Disney has now released the D23 trailer shown to the wider audience and it has left us questioning our lead character.

In the two minutes and change clip, the trailer describes the film as “the story of a generation [that] comes to and end”. It includes clips from pre-Disney Star Wars films, showing our beloved characters in the most iconic moments within the franchise.

In terms of new footage, we have a lot to get excited about. The clip shows Kylo Ren and Rey battling it out with their respective red and blue lightsabres on a stormy shore. It also shows Rey doing some nifty tricks with her dual sabre, throwing it like a boomerang through a tree.

The big tease in the, well, teaser, was Key wearing a black hood and wielding a dual sabre in red similar to that of Darth Maul. This scene, which is back dropped by the sound of Darth Vader breathing, has left us scratching our heads on the journey Rey is going to take in this ninth iteration of Star Wars.

At the near-end of the last film, The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker himself says that “…I will not be the last Jedi”, in reference to Rey using the Force and starting to show potential in learning the ways of the Jedi Order. Clearly, this hooded Rey, or Darth Rey-der, is a step in the opposite direction.

During the D23 panel, Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, spoke about what it’s like touching both sides of the Force in her third Star Wars film:

“It’s been great, “I also think, weirdly, it’s been the most human thing because everybody struggles. Everybody has their things in life where one thing’s pulling me this way, one thing’s pulling me this way. What’s this journey going to be and where am I going to end up? So it’s been fun to play that.”

Ridley is alluding to her character dealing with the pulls of both the Dark Side and the Light. If we were to throw in our prediction, or perhaps hope. We’d love to see Rey become a ‘Grey Jedi’, someone who uses the Force and walks the line between the Light and Dark side, finding balance in between.

The film is set to release internationally on December 20.
