Good Boys – a film that follows three 12-year olds as they desperately try to get into a kissing party – has taken the top spot in the American box office.
It’s the first time an R-Rated comedy has placed number one since Universal’s Melissa McCarthy film, The Boss in early 2016.
Good Boys was produced by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, under Universal studios. It’s proving a decent summer for the studio, who are also responsible for this summer’s blockbuster smash, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (which currently sits under Good Boys in the number two spot).
Rounding out the top three was The Lion King.
Good Boys is being heralded as Rogan and Goldberg’s return to Superbad form. Twelve years after the coming-of-age film introduced the creative duo to the starlight, this film is a welcome return to that genre of comedy.
The film follows three innocent tweens as they attempt to escape punishment and make a name for themselves among ‘the cool kids’ in sixth grade. Expect lots of swearing, lots of ignorance about the opposite sex, and lots of fun.
Speaking to Variety, Goldberg said, “Working with people who aren’t jaded yet by years in Hollywood is always a good time.”
“It’s nice to think we might be the ones who jade them,” returned Rogan.
