Despite the sequel not being in plans revealed by Marvel at Comic-Con

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is going into production, despite not being mentioned by Marvel Studios during Comic-Con.

While Thor 4, Black Widow, Doctor Strange, and Shang-Chi all got their names dropped as part of Marvel’s Phase 4, nothing was said about a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.

Fortunately, James Gunn confirmed to a fan via Twitter that a third Guardians film is on the cards.

On Sunday, Gunn tweeted a celebration that Avengers: Endgame had beaten Avatar to become the highest-grossing film in history. When a fan asked him why Phase 4 did not include the Guardians, Gunn responded “sorry to disappoint. Guardians Vol. 3 is happening, but I am finishing The Suicide Squad first”.

Gunn was sacked from the Marvel blockbuster, after some inflammatory social media posts he’d made between 2008 and 2012 resurfaced online, causing some outrage.

However, after franchise stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista were vocal about wanting Gunn back, he was re-hired by Disney in March.

Gunn’s new Suicide Squad film will be the second attempt by DC to get its gang of antiheroes off the ground. The first film, released in 2016, was widely panned (although, it did earn $746 million at the global box office).

Gunn signed on to write and direct Suicide Squad – which is not a sequel to the 2016 film – and which is destined to hit cinemas in August of 2021.
