While many speculated that Netflix’s The Witcher might fill a Game of Thrones-sized gap, not much was known about the television adaptation of the story until now.
Showrunner Lauren Hissrich has now said that it will be like Game of Thrones in more ways than one. According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Witcher will be a ‘very adult show’ containing “magic and story and violence and sex”.
Although, she was also keen to point out that “any violence or sex drives the story and is not there just for shock value.”
The show has got Superman actor Henry Cavill as the title character; a monster hunter called Geralt. It’s also got Anya Chalotra (Sherlock) and newcomer Freya Allan as main characters Yennefer and Ciri.
Cavill has a huge fan of the show and approached Hissrich when he found out she was leading the project. He only got the role after Hissrich had met and screen-tested another 200 potential lead actors to ensure he was perfect for the role.
Hissrich has also said that what sets The Witcher apart from Game of Thrones will be the number of monster and horror aspects. Hissrish expects viewers to be “surprised by how many monsters we were able to do and how integral they are to story.”
