Let’s hope it won’t be shown after midnight

Warner Brothers has confirmed a 10-episode series called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, which will tell the story of Gizmo meeting film protagonist Sam Wing. The series takes place many years before the first film.

The series is due to return next year, on the 30th anniversary of the franchise. The animated series will be hosted on Warner Brothers’ upcoming and yet-unnamed streaming service.

The plot takes place in 1920s Shanghai, and follows the story of Sam Wing – then a ten-year-old boy who would become Mr Wing (who owns the shop where Gizmo is found in the first movie).

The series will revolve around the boy and the Mogwai (which translates as ‘bad spirit’ in Cantonese) along with a teenage pickpocket Elle, trying to return Gizmo to his family.

Throughout their adventure, they will confront monsters and spirits drawn from Asian folklore, all while being chased by a power-hungry madman and his growing army of evil gremlins.

Tze Chun (who previously helmed Gotham) is penning the script and serving as executive producer. Consultants from Warner Bros. and Amblin Television – who created the first two Gremlins films – are helping produce the series.

Warner Bros. streaming service will be available this year, and begin offering original programming starting 2020.
