Are you in the market for a new jacket? Do you have around a million dollars just burning a hole in your pocket? Are you a fan of the motion picture Star Wars?
If you answered “yes” to all three of those questions, well do I have news for you: The jacket worn by Harrison Ford for his role as Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back is going up for auction in the UK. And it’s expected to fetch up to £1 million, or US$1.3 million.
Will the lucky rich person who acquires this piece of movie history actually wear it? Highly doubtful! But I would like to believe that whoever it is, he or she decides to wear it just once. Maybe to a restaurant. Maybe just in front of the mirror to practice some sweet blaster moves. Maybe in the boudoir to keep things spicy (if whoever it happens to be into that kinda thing).
The New York Post reports that there are a bunch of other goodies in the sale, like a Stormtrooper helmet (somewhere in the neighborhood of US$80K) and Anakin’s lightsaber from Revenge of the Sith, which is valued around US$130,000 because even items from the bad movies in the Star Wars franchise are incredibly valuable. But who cares about those things? Back to the jacket!]

It’s actually a pretty fascinating piece. It doesn’t have any fasteners because it was designed to be worn open. (Fun fact: George Lucas didn’t want visible fasteners on any of the Star Wars costumes because he thought they were too close to contemporary earthbound styles.)
It’s also a grey-blue colour that doesn’t match the one you see on screen in Empire. That’s because blues tend to show up darker on film; to get the navy colour in the movie, you have to have the lighter colour in real life. Isn’t learning fun?
The auction, courtesy of London’s Prop Store, takes place on September 20. Which gives fans just under two months to get that $1.3 million together.
