China’s best-known contemporary artist and most outspoken political dissident – Ai Weiwei – has released a new documentary, and it couldn’t be more timely.
Weiwei is no stranger to the trials of migration, which is why his latest film focuses on displaced people. Like the subjects of his film, Weiwei also fled his homeland at a young age.
Human Flow is an emotional rollercoaster, a heartbreaking exploration into the global refugee crisis. The crisis that has forced over 65 million people across the globe to leave their homes in due to of famine, climate change and war.
The movie gives a powerful insight into the painful journey that kids to old-aged adults are forced to partake in; it follows a chain of urgent human stories ranging from camps in Iraq to the US-Mexican borders; the movie follows real-life strugglers from 23 different countries through-out an eventful year.
“I didn’t want to just make a pure documentary,” says Ai Weiwei. As this Amazon studios production, is more than just a 2hr movie; it’s a story of people fighting for their survival across generations from refugee camps to perilous ocean crossings to barbed-wire borders.
Will Ai Weiwei’s message change our global society’s prespective on refugees? Only time will tell.
