In South Park season 19 of South Park, its creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone attempted to run a single narrative throughout an entire season, using a serialised episode format.
But after the genius of that season, the psychotic news cycle of the 2016 election destroyed South Park‘s rhythm. And while it had its moments, the last season of South Park couldn’t out-ridiculous Donald Trump. And that’s why this season South Park will go back to what it was before serialization and Trump.
In the new trailer for Season 21, Cartman sings to the tune of “This Is How We Do It”: “Let’s flip the track and bring the old school back.” And that’s exactly what’s going to happen in the upcoming season.
As Parker told the Los Angeles Times earlier this year:
This season I want to get back to Cartman dressing up like a robot and [screwing] with Butters because to me that’s the bread and butter of South Park: kids being kids and being ridiculous and outrageous but not ‘did you see what Trump did last night?’ Because I don’t give a [sh*t] anymore. We probably could put up billboards—’Look what we’re going to do to Trump next week!’—and get crazy ratings. But I just don’t care.
It’s the way things should be.
