Proving that girl power is often vastly underestimated, Wonder Woman has now officially surpassed Sam Raimi’s Spiderman to become the highest grossing superhero origin film of all time. This commercial success has comes as a rather pleasant surprise, especially when considering that the majority of recent superhero movies have appeared more like a Gamma Ray-infused boy’s club than a collective of equal heroes from both genders.
Typically relegating female characters as menial love interests or bit-part players who don’t have a whole lot to do apart from stand and look pretty, Wonder Woman has refreshingly broken the misogynistic trend of women being simply incapable of saving men. It’s also refreshingly broken the trend of female-led superhero movies – like Tank Girl, Elektra, and Catwoman – being absolute garbage.
Having amassed a $404,008,376 (which is almost Dhs1.5 billion) total at the box-office, Wonder Woman has surpassed the testosterone fuelled likes of Batman Begins, Deadpool, Captain America, and Iron Man to prove that moviegoers are keen to see more female superheroes in the spotlight.
This success is all the more impressive when we consider the fact that Gal Gadot was five months’ pregnant while filming reshoots for the high octane film. Not only was she an ass-kicking badass of a woman, but she was an ass-kicking badass of a woman with another little ass-kicking woman in the making inside of her womb. Which is pretty badass.
Although the princess of the Amazons remains behind successful sequels like The Dark Knight and Avengers: Age of Ultron in the list of all-time grossing superhero movies, the financial and critical success of Wonder Woman should hopefully encourage more female-led productions from Marvel and DC in the future.
A Brie Larson led ‘Captain Marvel’ film is already set to be Marvel’s answer to Wonder Woman, though the film won’t be released until some time in 2019.
With a Wonder Woman sequel having already been confirmed and given a December 13, 2019 release date, we can only hope that this trend of literally empowered women will continue on into the future.
