The 1985 game becomes the most expensive video game ever

How iconic was the original 1985 Super Mario Bros. game? Well, not only did a rare first edition of it just break the record for the single most expensive video game ever sold, but it took the record, from another copy of the same game.

Sold at auction for AED430,000 ($114,000), the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game was in mint condition, and had never been taken out of its box since its release in 1985.

According to Heritage Auctions – who sold the game to an unknown buyer – this edition of the game warrented it high price due to its rare cardboard hangtab, which was used before plastic packaging was used to seal games. It was given a ‘9.4’ grading to verify its near-perfect condition.

In February earlier this uear, another copy of the exact same game was bought at auction for AED367,800 ($100,150), making the original version of Super Mario Bros. on the NES, both the first and second most expensive video game ever sold.
