The book will explore more of both Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt’s characters’ past

Quentin Tarantino is set to adapt his latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood into a book.

The book will explore more of characters Rick Dalton (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) “forward and backward in time.”

Part of the novel will explore Dalton’s career after his time in Bounty Law, when he looks for more movie roles in Italy. It will also include more interactions with real-life actors, such as Burt Reynolds, Pete Duel, Jim Brown and Fred Williamson.

“In the seventies movie novelizations were the first adult books I grew up reading,” Tarantino said in a statement released by the publishers.

“And to this day I have a tremendous amount of affection for the genre. So as a movie-novelization aficionado, I’m proud to announce Once Upon A Time In Hollywood my contribution to this often marginalized, yet beloved sub-genre in literature. I’m also thrilled to further explore my characters and their world in a literary endeavor that can (hopefully) sit alongside its cinematic counterpart.”

This is part of a wider two-book deal with HarperCollins.

Tarantino’s second book will be called Cinema Speculation. According to the publishers, it will be a “deep dive into the movies of the 1970s”. The book will include a mix of essays, film reviews, personal writing and “what ifs” from the director.

The publishers also tease the director’s “retirement plans”, which is something he has previously mentioned. Tarantino has said that he will only direct ten films in his life, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is the director’s 9th film.
