Nike actually wants you to set these Stranger Things shoes on fire
Nike is one of the many brands that has collaborated with Stranger Things. It has now revealed a third Stranger Things collaboration.
Both in June and July, Nike announced a Stranger Things drop of some kind, it’s now August and yet another has been rolled out.
The third season of Stranger Things patriotically dropped on July 4, almost a month ago. Clearly though there’s still money to be made as collaborations keep on coming. Thankfully this is our favourite yet.
Esquire Middle East has already covered the first of these collaborations, the ‘Hawkins High’ collection. As the name suggests, it celebrated the school our favourite characters attend, but in a stylish way. The shoes had a green and orange colourway and various nods to the school such as patches and embossing.
While these sneakers, the Blazers, the Tailwind 79 and the Cortez were faithful to what they were going for, it was a pretty obscure reference. Unless you are a super fan, you may not know the Hawkins colours. These latest shoes feel much closer to the iconic Stranger Things vibe. What's also awesome about them is that Nike wants you to set them on fire.
Instagram account 'Cran' was sent a pair of these shoes by Nike itself in Toronto. In a post showing the shoes given to him, Cran said you had to burn away the canvas to reveal the denim lurking inside.

huge shout out to @niketoronto fam for sending me the Blazer Mid from the Stranger Things ‘Upside Down’ collection. I’m a huge @strangerthingstv fan, so all the subtle details on this shoe in relation to the show are incredible. There are more details hidden on the sneaker but you have to burn the canvas away to reveal it Stay tuned for the post burn photos and swipe for the details!
These shoes come in a subtle beiged-out style, the perfect backdrop to compliment the red and black tongue tabs on the shoes. Previous collabs opted to change the colour of this branding on the tongue but these shoes have stuck with the traditional colours and we love it more because of it.
By setting them on fire or just treating them a bit rough, you'll strip back the beige canvas to reveal a dark denim layer underneath, as inspired by The Upside Down.
Tailwind 79 sneakers
Like shoes before it has Nike and Stranger Things branding in the soles, flipped upside down in reference to well, the ‘Upside Down’ in the shoe.
Where this collaboration takes branding a bit further is the heels of the shoes. The Nike name on the back is not only in Netflix (or Stranger Things) red, it is done in the Netflix font style rather than the Nike.
The entire collection is a more faithful merge of the two names, making a few minor changes to the style that show off Stranger Things and Netflix love in a big way. Shoes that will clock in at around or well over $200, it's a bit of a scary prospect to go at them with a lighter or iron wool, but just look how cool they look if you do.
The genius of this stylistic choice also, you can create a totally unique sneaker, expose different parts of the blue denim and leave others. It's a customisation opportunity.
The Cortez versions go for around $165, a wider release of the sneakers is expected on August 13 at retailers such as Sneakersnuff.
