Why is everyone posting 'aged' pictures on social media?
Have you noticed everyone from your friends to celebrities posting "aged" photos of themselves on social media? Well, it's part of a revived social media craze from a few years ago.
The Face App shows people pictures of what they will look like when they're old. It kinda takes away the suspense of it all doesn't it?
Everyone from movie stars to sports stars to your next door neighbour has been posting pictures of their old self. So, how exactly does the app work?
First you need to download the FaceApp on the the Apple App Store or Google Play store. It will ask you for access to your photo gallery, and then you get to choose from three AI photo editing options: young, old or older.
But what strikes me as a little bit crazy is, given how advanced the world's facial recognition technology is, why aren't people more worried about sharing their information and biometrics with this app?
Twitter user James Whatley posted an excerpt from the terms and conditions of the app and it a bit creepy. "By using the app, people are giving FaceApp access to use, modify, adapt and publish any images of you that you offer up in exchange for its AI modification magic."
TechCrunch reports that the app is able to access Photos on Apple’s iOS platform even if a user has set photo permissions to “never”. Another possible privacy violation the report flags is that the app uploads your photo to the cloud for processing, which means that it does not do on-device processing.
Which means your image is floating around the cloud up for the app to use anytime they please.
Now if that doesn't make you uncomfortable then go ahead and age away!
