Sportsman of the Year: Sergio Garcia
Sport has the ability to capture man’s greatest triumphs, disappointments, and vindications. Sure, the outcome may not always go the way fans want it to, but when it does, there is nothing quite like it.
One of these stories happened in the first few months of 2017, when Sergio Garcia, after 18 years as a professional —many of them ranked in the world’s top 10 — finally won his first Major tournament, the US Masters.
Genuinely considered one of the nicest guys in golf, his victory was a standout moment in the sporting calendar — and his 2017 was made even better due to him getting married and now expecting a child.
It’s been a pretty good year for you. How would you rank it out of ten?
If I could rank the year out of 10, I’d give it an 11. It’s been amazing, not only on the course where I won three times but off the course too!
Do you still get nervous on the first tee?
Yeah, I do, but that sense of nervous energy is a good thing to have. It means that you care and that you want to do a good thing. You learn to cope with it better as the years go by, but it is an important thing to have.
