While many of the video game’s many fans were disappointed that the beloved giraffe scene from the game was not included in this week’s episode 6 of The Last of Us, fear not–it’s coming.
UPDATE: The giraffe scene took place in tonight’s finale. Watch it here.
That comes from a source on Twitter, who said that the show did indeed film at a zoo in the final weeks of filming, meaning that the scene will most likely be included in episodes 8 or 9, with 9 being the series finale after the combination of episodes 1 and 2 led to a shortened season.
“My friend works at the zoo and can confirm this,” said the Twitter user.
Some online that were upset at the giraffe’s non-inclusion in the latest episode meant they had skipped it, but eagle-eyed viewers pointed out that this episode was set in Colorado, while the giraffe scene takes place in Salt Lake City, Utah–later in the season’s story and later in Joel and Ellie’s journey.
In the mean time, here’s a preview of episode 7, airing on February 27 only on OSN plus in the Middle East.
Why The Last of Us needs the giraffe scene
So, what is the importance of the giraffe scene anyways?
Here’s some spoilers for how the game plays out, so be alert:
The Last of Us giraffe scene comes after a group of cannibals threaten Joel and Ellie, leading them to feel that humanity may not be worth saving, and dropping their faith in life as we know it to its absolute nadir.
Then, when they enter Salt Lake City, Utah, they find a herd of wild giraffes are thriving, giving them hope that life will go on.
Think of it like Jurassic Park, when they find that the dinosaurs are breeding when this was supposed to be impossible.
Life, uh, finds a way.

Happy giraffe hunting, everyone! With your eyes, I mean. Please don’t kill any giraffes. Or lions for that matter.
