The reemergence of actor Johnny Depp to the public eye this week at the 76th Cannes Film Festival has been mostly joyous for long-time fans of the heartthrob, at least until some up close and personal red carpet pictures revealed a shocking discovery: Depp’s teeth are brown and rotten.
“Johnny Depp’s teeth are literally ROTTING!” said one Twitter user in a now-viral post that has received 4 million views since being shared yesterday.
Why are Johnny Depp’s teeth so bad?
As people rushed to try to get to the bottom how this happened, one person discovered an interview from 1995 in Premiere Magazine, in which he addressed his mouth bone issues, showing that this is a long-standing issue for the Pirates of the Caribbean star.
“I’ve got loads of cavities. I had a root canal done eight years ago that’s unfinished. It’s like a rotten little stub,” he told Premiere at the time.
“But I like it. It’s like when the Indians would make something beaded, they would always put imperfections on it. I’m proud of these. When I see people with perfect teeth, it drives me up the wall. I’d rather swallow a tick than have that!”

Viral photos send fans into tailspin

Why he’s shunning Hollywood
The actor also spoke at the press conference of Jeanne Du Barry, which he was more than 40 minutes late for, about not only the film, but his future in mainstream filmmaking. It doesn’t look like he’s going to be returning to big blockbusters any time soon.
“I don’t think about Hollywood. I don’t have much further need for Hollywood myself. It’s a very strange funny time when everybody would love to be able to be themselves but they can’t because they must fall in line with the person in front of them. You want to live that kind of life, I wish you the best. I’ll be on the other side somewhere,” Depp said.
