“Consistency,” admits Pep Guardiola when pressed on what has been the key trait underlining one of the most successful managerial careers in football’s long history. “Of course, it also helps that I have worked for some of the biggest and richest clubs in the world,” he laugh, before adding: “but that is no substitution for constant hard work and dedication, day-in and day-out.”
It’s advice that bears significant weight when it comes from a manager who has lead Barcelona, Bayern Munich and, now, Manchester City to a total of nearly 1,000 career matches – winning 39 trophies over that time. For context, that works out to be one trophy for every 25 games – an astounding record.
Guardiola was speaking last night during the inaugural ‘In Conversation with…‘ series from Esquire Middle East held in partnership NewCop.

NewCop ambassador Guardiola was the guest of honour taking to the stage after ample time meeting and greeting members of the hand-picked Esquire guestlist for the private event.

The event was hosted against the impressive backdrop of Dubai’s newest ‘can’t miss’ outdoor venue Marsa Boulevard. Located on the banks of the historic Dubai Creek, the vibrant lifestyle and culture hub is fast becoming a must-visit venue for a discerning clientele keen to enjoy fashion pop-ups, immersive activations and innovative food concepts by homegrown brands and local creative talent.
Pep Guardiola spoke on stage in conversation with Esquire Middle East‘s Editor-in-Chief, Matthew Priest discussing a wide range of topics including:

Career highlights
“Obviously, winning the treble [with Manchester City] in 2023 was great. When you’re winning you feel like you’re on top of the world, but when you are in a bad moment you really, really suffer. This year has not been easy, but life is like that, ups-and-downs.”

Life lessons
“Success comes from committing and giving everything to what you want to achieve. You have to feel it deep inside you, the hunger, the desire – let it drive you.”

The most naturally talented player he’s coached
“Of course, Leo Messi is above everyone else, but there have been so many exceptional players in every team I have coached. I could also add Xavi Hernandez, Andreas Iniesta, Philipp Lahm, Samuel Eto’o and so many players from Manchester City.”
Considering international management
“Yes, absolutely, if the right project comes along. I am from Catalonia, so my dream would be to manage a Catalonia team, but that doesn’t look likely to happen.”

The one player that he wishes he had signed
“I would have loved to work with Neymar Jr., the way he sees and plays football is so sexy. We could have created art together”

Marsa Boulevard is open daily until May, from 4:00pm to midnight on weekdays and 1am on weekends. Ramadan hours apply, with later closing times and the daily iftar cannon being sounded by Dubai Police.
