The late Hardy Amies said it best when he declared: “A man should look as if he has bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care and then forgotten all about them.” Beyond this guiding principle, the formula for a stylish man is harder to pinpoint.
With that in mind our 2017’s selection of the Esquire’s Best Dressed Men in the Gulf, presents a completely unscientific example stylish real-men in action, with our study of men who wear their clothes with a sense of individuality, confidence and consideration.
Our fashion team – lead by fashion editor Daniel Higgins – went on the hunt for guys who look cool without trying too hard. (Though, to be fair, we’d say most of them put a lot more work into their wardrobe than the average man on the street). That was the only criteria for the shortlist; there were no attempts to tick ethnic boxes or be “diverse”. And yet, reading through the profiles, we counted 13 different nationalities among the 15 finalists.
This year’s list included property developers, models, designers, CEOs and a writer. And, for the record, eight guys were also sockless, but the enduring popularity of the mankle is a topic for another day.
