For the last 13 years, Dubai’s iconic beacon, the Burj Khalifa, has stood strong as the world’s tallest tower. Now with Kuwait’s new plans, in the coming years, it may not be the tallest building in the region.

The Burj Mubarak, an ambitious plan to make the tallest building in the world at a staggering 1 kilometer high, is the centerpiece to Kuwait’s new Madinat Al Hareer, or ‘Silk City’ project.

With a proposed height of one kilometer, this colossal tower is anticipated to surpass the current tallest building, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which stands at an impressive 828 meters (2,717 feet) (CTBUH, 2021), though we won’t be sure for a bit just yet.

When will the Burj Mubarak be completed?

How long will it take? Well, the Burj Mubarak megaproject is expected to be completed within 25 years and will feature a unique design comprised of three interlocking, twisting structures to withstand 150 mph winds and resulting vibrations, according to Business Insider.

The tower’s height is actually deliberate homage to the timeless collection of folk tales, 1001 Arabian Nights, and will boast 234 floors capable of housing up to 7,000 individuals.

So maybe in the end, it will be 1001 meters tall?

Construction of the Burj Mubarak will only begin after the completion of the Jaber Causeway, a vital connection to the project.

At the heart of Madinat Al Hareer, the tower will be surrounded by four distinct city quarters: Finance City, Leisure City, Ecological City, and Residential City. Each quarter will offer a range of amenities, including hotels, residences, offices, and entertainment facilities, as well as a strong emphasis on educational and cultural offerings (Tamdeen Group).

This should be a big boost to Kuwait’s economy. In all, Silk City project is expected to generate a staggering $81.5 billion investment, diversifying Kuwait’s national economy and creating 430,000 jobs for locals.

The city is designed to accommodate over 700,000 people.

Although the Burj Mubarak will surpass the Burj Khalifa in terms of height, the latter will remain a remarkable structure. It which officially opened in 2010, boasts 163 floors and is home to the world’s highest observation deck, at 555 meters (1,821 feet) (CTBUH, 2021). Furthermore, the building’s unique design, inspired by the Hymenocallis flower, showcases the marvels of modern engineering.

With the Burj Mubarak tower in Kuwait’s Silk City project set to push the boundaries of architectural achievement, Middle East’s status as a region with some of the world’s most incredible and innovative structures will continue long into the future.
