Central to the mission of A. Lange & Söhne is to challenge the conventions of horology.  There is perhaps no greater testament to that mission than the Zeitwerk. A. Lange & Söhne presents two new versions of the award-winning mechanical digital watch in platinum and pink gold.

The timepiece has received an upgrade, now sporting a power reserve that’s been doubled to 72 hours, offering even greater convenience. The minute-by-minute shifting of the large jumping numerals might appear to be moved by some otherworldly force, it’s actually precisely controlled by a reliable calibre with seven patents.

Historic inspiration

The master watchmakers at A. Lange & Söhne took their inspiration from the famous five-minute clock at the Semper Opera House in Dresden. Clock maker Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes was commissioned to create a clock that would be easily legible even from the very back of an auditorium. His revolutionary solution was to create a clock that displayed the time digitally in five minute increments, the Zeitwerk is reminiscent of this creation but clearly reworked to perfection. Even though the watch we see today switches five times as often as its inspiration, an appreciation for the history of watchmaking is truly reflected in the work of the watchmakers at A. Lange & Söhne.

The second generation

In 2009, A. Lange & Söhne presented the first Zeitwerk to the amazement of the world of horology, the new generation goes a step further with the refined calibre L043.6.

A patented barrel design with two mainsprings allows this new generation of watches to have a 72 hour power reserve, double that of the previous iteration. An integral component of the timepiece’s movement of course is the time bridge made of German silver. In the new Zeitwerk, the component was subtly reworked to make more room for the subsidiary seconds dial at six o’clock. This new generation of the Zeitwerk comes in two versions, pink gold and platinum. The former is paired with a black dial and a black alligator leather strap, the latter a silver dial with a dark brown alligator leather strap.

The new Zeitwerk continues the pattern of excellence and subversion of watchmaking norms A. Lange & Söhne has become known for, and is most definitely a noteworthy update of an already impressive timepiece.
