Some watch brands have a heritage that dates back hundreds of years. And then there’s MAEN watches… but that’s not a bad thing

MAEN watches is a brand that originated from Stockholm. Known for affordable but well-built timepieces, the two Dutch founders first made a name for themselves after it launched its first line – the Classic Moon.

When it came to their second collection – the Manhattan 40 – the Dutch duo turned to Kickstarter to help fund production. And we’re certainly glad it worked.

Like the previous range, this collection takes inspiration from an old Dutch wooden ship, called the Half Moon. On September 1609, it reached the cost of New York and the Island of Manhattan. Hence why this is called simply: the Manhattan

There are actually four models in the Manhattan 40 series – but all come in a 40-millimetre case. When you look at this watch, what immediately strikes you is its elegance.

It has a delicately brushed case with a highly polished face. The flat bezel has a delicate chamfering, and the sapphire crystal face has been given an anti-reflective coating.

The dial is rather interesting. It has large hour indexes that make a bold statement. So too do the big faceted dauphine hands, with a trimmed tip. Near the six o’clock position, you can see the classic moon-phase indication, featuring a golden moon and stars.Under the hood lies a Swiss Ronda movement, which is both robust and reliable. It’s a good choice for a classic looking watch.

The Maen Manhattan 40 watches come with a 20mm Italian leather strap, with a solid butterfly clasp in stainless steel.

The entire range, including this one, is available right now from MaenWatches.com
