Sports fans rejoice. It’s been a long few months after our self-imposed sports drought. Football and other sports all over the world cut short their current seasons to curb the spread of coronavirus and make sure safety measures were in place for their teams and fans. Now, the first of the football leagues is coming back to our screens at home.
The Bundesliga season will restart next week on May 16, the German football league has confirmed, after the government gave the green light on a return to action.
However, while the games will start going ahead as normal, all matches will take place without any spectators in the stands. The German football league (DFL) will decide on the exact dates for the matches to take place.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin: “This is a huge and positive step to bringing optimism back to people’s lives”.
Current league leaders Bayern Munich are four points clear of Borussia Dortmund with nine matchweeks to go. Here are the initial fixtures:
The Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 season will resume from May 16th. In both leagues, the season will continue with the 26th matchday. The other matchdays will follow in the order originally scheduled.

However, this is the first of the European football leagues to restart the season. The English Premier League is currently exploring options to resume the season under “Project Restart”, however no decision has been made yet. The Guardian reports that the British government wants football back “as soon as possible”, according to the culture secretary, so that, it can “lift the spirits of the nation”.
The Netherlands and France, have both ended their seasons.
