Batman is arguably one of the comic world’s best protagonists. And given how many different Batman movies have been made, the studios definitely know this already. After Ben Affleck’s controversial take on the superhero in DC’s Justice League, it was recently announced that Robert Pattinson will play the Batman in an upcoming movie. It’s even set to be a trilogy.
There have been some good ones and there have definitely been some bad ones. Anyone remember Val Kilmer’s horrible suit? In the last decade or so, actors Christian Bale and Ben Affleck have portrayed the caped crusader in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, respectively.
But there is one Batman playing actor that has stood out from the crowd. According to a new poll from The Hollywood Reporter/Morning Consult, America has (two) favorite Dark Knights. Christian Bale barely took first place with 39 percent, followed by Michael Keaton at 38 percent. George Clooney came in third with 19 percent, then Ben Affleck with 18 percent. Poor Val Kilmer landed dead last with 17 percent, even though his suit didn’t even have nipples.
Esquire Middle East reported when the news was announced that the new series will be a fresh start for the franchise with no connection to Snyder’s films. Affleck’s now-scrapped script was rumoured to be a dark noir-style story that has elements of a detective film. However, the new direction is focusing on a younger Batman and the first of the trilogy likely an origin story in the same vein as Batman Begins.
That said, Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter that the tone might not be too dissimilar.
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale,” he said. “It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode that we’ve seen in the films.”
He explained, “The comics have a history of that. [Bruce Wayne] is supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been.”
But will the world have a new favourite Batman and Joker with Robert Pattinson and Joaquin Phoenix playing those two roles? Well, the movie comes out on June 25, 2021. So, we’ll just have to wait and see.
