The 12th Mubadala World Tennis Championship will take place December 19-21

  • The Mubadala World Tennis Championship is going down a week earlier than normal this year

  • It is hoped shifting the event back earlier during the festive month will increase the number of tennis fans

  • The Championship welcomes eight of the greatest tennis players in the world, six male and two female

The 12th Mubadala World Tennis Championship is coming to town a week earlier this year. The prestigious tournament has been moved one week back in order to increase international attendance thanks to all the pre-Christmas tourists flocking in.

Tournament owner Flash Entertainment has announced that the event will take place from December 19-21 this year, a break from tradition, it is described as a strategic date switch.

“The Mubadala World Tennis Championship has always been a huge hit with people from across the globe, offering intimate and unrivalled access to the world’s best players in a special, festival atmosphere. We are constantly looking to evolve the event and the new dates will enhance the senses of visitors and further cement Abu Dhabi’s reputation as the perfect winter holiday destination,” said John Lickrish, CEO, Flash Entertainment.

Rashed Alharmoodi, Head of External Corporate Relations for Mubadala, the title sponsor of the tournament, commented: “Our long-standing support of this tournament is focused on the benefits it offers the community. Bringing world-class sports stars to the nation’s capital provides a great spectacle for sports fans while presenting role models for young people. It’s an opportunity for us to work with our partners to promote healthy living and an active lifestyle through tennis. Zayed Sports City is a fantastic, world-class venue for this event and we’re pleased with the role the Championship plays in promoting Abu Dhabi internationally.”

The players have not yet been announced for the three-day, nine-match event, though last year it welcomed Novak Djokovic, Kevin Anderson, Dominic Thiem, Karen Khachanov, Rafael Nadal and Hyeon Chung. On the ladies’ side last year, sisters Venus Williams and Serena Williams were in attendance.
