Introducing the new Urwerk UR-105 CT Streamliner – a watch produced in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the independent brand (one of the most unusual in existence today).
The Urwerk UR-105 Streamliner is meant to represent where the company all began when the founders first met each other in New York. The lines of the watch are supposed to evoke the Art Deco architecture prominent in the Big Apple and features a sliding section that offers wearers a view of the open work satellite mechanism below. Along the middle lines of the UR-105’s octagonal case is a catch, which slides open.
Speaking at the anniversary launch of the watch, co-founder Felix Baumgartner said, The UR-105 CT is a watch with a fleixble design when it is closed, it looks austere, with only the time indication visible. Open the protective cover, and you delve into a metallic environment that is quite cold. The Streamliner’s carousel has been completely redesigned, becoming lighter, stronger, and far more effective.”
The UR-105 Streamliner will come in two versions, both of which cost around AED238,745 (or US$65,000). The first is made with titanium and mirror-polished steel, while the other is a titanium and black PVD-coated steel.
When Felix Baumgartner (not the one who jumped out of a balloon in space, by the way) and Martin Frei set out 20 years ago, they wanted to produce timepieces with unusual mechanisms and other-worldly systems for displaying the time.
They began in 1997 – at that fruitful meeting in New York – during a time the watch world was still recovering from the Quartz-crisis (and when other watch marquis were understandably dubious about adding additional technology to their pieces). But it worked, and today Urwerk is considered one of the most innovative and modern horological houses in existence.
