Is this the first Mexican restaurant in Dubai to truly nail authentic, high-end flavours? Si.

Mexican cuisine connoisseurs will know just how hard it can be to find an establishment serving up the real deal as opposed to westernised Tex-Mex flavours most of the world has become so accustomed to. Thankfully, Peyote in Dubai‘s DIFC manages to serve up legit flavours that are straight out of Mexico City…without the airfare.

Peyote fits right in to the upscale business hub’s scene with its elegant interiors, however you might be surprised to know that despite Peyote’s London roots, the materials are sourced from Mexico. That goes with the staff too who mainly hail from Mexico, boosting Peyote’s credibility when it comes to knowing a thing or two about Mexican ingredients, flavours and beverages.

Speaking of Mexican beverages, you won’t just find top shelf Tequila here, there’s a plethora of Mezcal and creative Margarita options, as well as, rather unusually, Mexican wine.

Peyote’s large menu should please Mexican cuisine enthusiasts and first-timers alike, with dishes running the gamut from subtle to spicy. Order Peyote’s Sopas (that’s soups) for a taste of Mexico you rarely find outside its borders – we tried the Gazpacho Verde (AED25) and the Sopa de Tortilla (AED28), both exceptionally well priced, the latter delivering some serious Mexican comfort food.

Don’t miss the opportunity to try a signature Mexican ingredient, Nopales (prickly pear), or their Jalapeño Fritos (AED45) which are so good you’d be forgiven for ordering a second portion. Peyote’s tacos feature deliciously authentic soft tortillas and a wide variety of fillings – our beef short rib, chicken adobo and tempura avocado all pleased.  We enjoyed our Tostadas de Verduras (AED58), or vegetable tostadas, and the Quesadilla de Hongos (AED52), but ensure you save space for the Carne on offer.

Our Lomo de Wagyu (AED320) and the Chuletón con Mantequilla de Cilantro (AED210) impressed, both devoured by our table at a rapid rate, though the standout dish was the the latter of the two. We would return just for this sensational cut, however the strong flavour profile of the lamb (Barbacoa de Cordero, AED195) wasn’t a hit with our table. Peyote’s sides also won rave reviews, in particular the Esquites (AED40) – grilled sweetcorn, jalapeño mayonnaise and queso fresco.

Whilst you would be forgiven for being well sated by Peyote’s savoury offerings, ensure you leave room to try Peyote’s version of the traditional Tres Leches (AED48) and Churros (AED42). Whilst both are delicious, should these not be your cup of tea, there are plenty of surprisingly enticing desserts on offer. If you’ve been craving an authentic taste of Mexico or want to explore it’s unique flavours without a nacho in sight, Peyote should be your first stop.
