Introducing the CR7 Underwear collection

Footballing megastar Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates the launch of his fifth CR7 Underwear collection with the release of the bold new campaign, Colour Splash. Now, love him or hate him, throwing paint at Ronaldo as he poses for the shoot looks like brilliant fun (see the video below).

After wiping the paint off, the Real Madrid striker answered some questions about his new collection:

What differentiates this collection from your previous collections?
CR: My passion for design is at an all-time high and I tried to incorporate that into the SS16 collection by working with different styles, patterns and colours. I think it’s important to experiment with fashion and not take yourself too seriously – adding colour into your outfits, even subtly with underwear, is the perfect way to do this.

How does your football career influence the Spring/Summer 2016 collection?
For me running onto the pitch, seeing a stadium full of fans cheering me and my team mates on is an amazing feeling and something that inspires me. Seeing a full stadium from the pitch is unique, with all the colours of the world surrounding you, its so vivid, bright and powerful. I wanted to reflect that feeling in this collection and create brightly coloured, vibrant pieces.

How would you describe your day-to-day personal style?
I dress more casual at home- a pair of comfortable jeans and a t-shirt are what I wear most often but I’ve always believed that underwear is the foundation of any outfit and can inspire the rest of your look. Colour is uplifting which is why I use it so much in my designs. Even under a formal look I like knowing that there’s something fun and more relaxed to my outfit!

How involved are you in the design process?
I am involved in everything, I want each design to show my true colours and reflect what I would want in my own wardrobe. I really enjoy being part of the design and production process, I’m bit of a perfectionist and naturally I want to be really involved in all of my personal passion projects. The most satisfying part is wearing styles that were once just a few sketches on the drawing board.

The Spring/Summer 2016 campaign was so different to your previous campaigns, how would you describe it, and what inspired you?
Our bodies are a blank canvas and underwear is the first thing we put on – so why not start the day well and add a splash of colour into your life! This is what I wanted to represent with the colour splash concept. Colour can be powerful in inspiring people to come alive and express themselves and clothing and fashion is a great way to do this. I wanted the campaign to show the bright, vibrant colours that we use in the CR7 Underwear collection but for it also be a bit of fun and a totally new experience.

The shoot concept looks very unique- was it a first for you?
It was really fun and it was good to be taken out of my comfort zone. I do a lot of shoots but this really was something that I’ve never done before and I didn’t know what to expect! At first I was nervous but after five minutes I felt completely at home – it’s not every day that you have people throwing coloured pigments over you. By the end of the shoot it was everywhere- in my hair, all over my body, in my eyes! But it was a lot of fun and I love the final result.

Do you have a personal favourite from the collection?
I tend to wear the trunk styles, the fit is perfect and they come in so many colours and patterns. I wear them every day- even under my swimwear on holiday!

What is next for the CR7 brand?
Who knows? What’s most important is continuing to work on all my CR7 brands developing the designs and exploring all the possibilities with design, production and creative elements. I am learning more about the fashion industry every day and I want to take that and continue to build and develop the success of my brands.
