Canada –
Designed by Dan and Dean Caten, the dynamic duo behind fashion house Dsquared2, Team Canada’s uniforms are certainly unique. Combining more traditional blazers with a relaxed streetwear style, the uniforms come across as typically Canadian – as they should – with both the colour scheme and giant maple leaf representing the country loudly and proudly. A risk well taken. 8/10
Russia –
Team Russia’s uniform for Rio 2016 is certainly something to see. Sorry, did we say Rio 2016? We obviously meant 1975. These uniforms look like something out of the heyday of the Soviet Union and are one of the most retro inspired get-ups we have ever seen to grace the Olympic stage. That’s not to say they are a complete tragedy however, as the throwback stylings of this design do have a certain charm though they would be better suited to a cheerleading competition than the grandest sporting event of the year. 6/10
Sweden –
Designed by high street juggernaut H&M, the Swedish team’s outfit is the perfect mix of cool and colourful. With a colourway of yellow and blue it would have been easy for these outfits to become gaudy rather than great, however we feel H&M has achieved the perfect balance between the two. Nice work, Sweden. 9/10
USA –
These team USA uniforms, designed by luxury brand Ralph Lauren, are a regrettable misfire. Teaming with the iconic American stalwart should have created a uniform that would send patriotism tingling down the spines of every American worldwide. Instead, what we are greeted with is an overly preppy ensemble that is sure to leave U.S. fans feeling red, white, and overwhelmingly blue. This is something you’d wear to a beach side party. A beach side party you weren’t invited to in the first place. A beach side party you weren’t to in the first place because you dress like this. 3/10
France –
Created in collaboration with French fashion giants Lacoste, the French will be kitted out this Olympics in monochromatic simplicity. White trousers and white polos along with a navy blue trench coat deliver an understated aesthetic and a level of class that some detractors may find slightly too pared back. Decisions such as decking the iconic Lacoste crocodile in the national flag’s tricolore are a lovely touch and the overall uniform emits a strong air of sophistication. 9/10
Australia –
Ah, Australia. Home to such beautiful sights as the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Opera House, and now these offensively hideous Olympic uniforms. We really mean it when we say that these outfits can digeri-do one. The white and green pinstripe blazer is offensive enough in itself, yet paired with shorts that would make your rich yacht-loving Uncle blush these uniforms are a criminal offence. 1/10
Italy –
Emporio Armani’s EA7 sports line are who we have to thank for the Italian uniform this year, however, despite its undeniable sense of cool, we feel that this uniform doesn’t really represent Italy as well as it could. The large seven plastered on the jackets is definitely a detriment but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t want to get ourselves a full tracksuit. 7/10
