In a sport where precision timekeeping is imperative to success, watches and yacht racing go together like champagne and Formula One. So it comes as little surprise that a new partnership has been made between the decorated Swiss yacht team, Alinghi, and famed Swiss watchmaker, Omega.
What does come as a surprise however, is the specially produced Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Alinghi piece a reworked version of the watchmaker’s Speedmaster watch – famous for being the first watch worn on the moon – as opposed to its more nautically-inclined cousin, the Seamaster.
That said, powered by the Omega Caliber 1865 manual winding movement, this slick model is both a very sporty and highly technical incarnation of the ‘moonwatch’ that any skipper would die to get their hands on.
aking design cues from Alinghi’s state-of-the-art sailing yachts, the AED40,000 piece focuses on lightness and high-tech materials to create a robust chronograph worthy of a championship sailing team.
For starters, the brawny 44.25-mm case is made of black zirconium oxide ceramic, a lightweight, yet durable, high-tech material that is tougher than stainless steel.
This experience and expertise in sports timekeeping, particularly in sailing events, was on display earlier this month when Omega announced that it will serve as the official timekeeper of the 36th America’s Cup yacht race that will be held 6 to 21 March, 2021, in Auckland, New Zealand.
