Is Emirates truly the world’s best airline, or is it just basking in the glow of its latest accolades?

The airline recently snagged top honors at the Ultimate Luxury Travel Related Awards (ULTRAs), held at the chic Nikki Beach Club in Dubai. Scooping up ‘Best Airline in the World’ and ‘Best Airline in the Middle East’, the airline was quick to flaunt this double win on social media.

But let’s not get carried away on a first-class flight of fancy just yet.

Emirates, while not new to the high ranks of airline lists, does indeed tick many boxes. A mention in the top ten global airlines by AirlineRatings.com in May, and an APEX World Class Airline nod for 2024 for exceptional customer service and safety standards, paints a pretty picture. However, let’s not forget that these lists are more like beauty contests than empirical studies.

The airline has made strides to enhance its offerings – from city check-in facilities at Dubai International Financial Centre to complimentary Wi-Fi for Emirates Skywards members. These perks, while impressive, are more cherry-on-top than game changers.

On the sustainability front, Emirates deserves a hat tip. Its 2024 IFSA award for the ‘Best Onboard Amenity’ – think sustainable Economy Class kits with recycled materials – shows an environmental consciousness, a must in today’s climate-aware world.

But what about the flying experience? Operating the world’s largest fleet of Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s, Emirates boasts a record half-year performance for 2023-24, ferrying over 26 million passengers without a dip in performance.

Impressive, yes, but does size equate to quality?

In the end, the best airline for you might not be about the accolades or the fleet size. It might be about the little things: the smile of the cabin crew, the extra inch of legroom, or the movie selection on a long-haul flight.

So, while Emirates may be flying high with its recent wins, the title of “world’s best airline” is up in the air, depending on who you ask.
