The Series 9 is Apple’s latest player in the smartwatch game.
Much like the recently launched iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, this version is all about refinement over re-evolution. So much so, that a casual glance might leave you scratching your head, wondering what exactly has changed.
A stitch in (design) time
Apple hasn’t thrown the design baby out with the bathwater. The Series 9 looks exactly like its predecessors, although it now comes in a lovely shade of pink (less “teen pop star” and more “understated elegance”).
And sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for Apple this time around. The Series 9 has more green energy than a vegan café. Every aluminum model is crafted from 100% recycled material and fitted with an environmentally friendly battery. Apple’s decision to drop leather bands in favour of a “Fine Woven” recycled textile is a nice touch, and it comes boxed in a newly shrunken package which keeps transport emissions low.

Under the hood
The Series 9 flexes some serious muscle internally. The display is so bright; you’d think it borrowed some shine from the Apple Watch Ultra’s first iteration (it’s double the brightness of the Series 8 model).
Siri, too, seems to have gulped down an energy drink, responding at breakneck speeds thanks to a new S9 processor. And speaking of processors, this one has two; the also new U2 ultra-wideband chip makes finding your misplaced iPhone a new favorite pastime.
Series 9 spoilers
A gimmick (and we do mean, gimmick) that caught our eye – or, more aptly, our fingers – is the Double Tap Gesture. Give your thumb and index finger a quick double-tap, and you can navigate and use the device without having to swipe the small screen. Whether it’s answering calls, replying to messages, or navigating apps, a simple double-tap gets the job done. Accidentally call your ex with an ill-timed wrist flick? Don’t fret; the feature’s off-switch has got your back.
The Series 9 also heralds the arrival of WatchOS 10, equipped with tools catered to cyclists, mental health and vision health tracking, and intriguing new watch faces. Apple Fitness Plus gets a revamp too, with stacked classes and customizable workout plans.

Juice check
Apple sticks to the script with an 18-hour battery on a single charge. A brighter display without guzzling more juice? Hats off, Apple engineers.
To buy or not to buy
Let’s cut to the chase. If you’re brandishing a Series 7 or 8 on your wrist, the Series 9 might not send you rushing to the stores. But with its tech-forward approach and green-foot-forward, it’s certainly a worthy upgrade.
The verdict?
The Series 9’s pink is pleasantly surprising, in a “I didn’t think I’d like it, but now I’m contemplating it” sort of way. The eco-initiatives are applause-worthy, and the Double Tap? Genius.
While it’s not a siren call to Series 8 or 7 owners, it’s hard to deny: The Series 9 is, without a doubt, the smartwatch king of the hill.
The Apple Watch Series 9 is available now starting at AED1,600.
