Dubai‘s appetite for innovation and ambitious, future-focused projects has not been derailed by impacts of the global pandemic, with the city’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) doubling down on plans to create a futuristic public transport network known as ‘Sky Pods’.
Earlier this year the RTA has announced the signing of an MoU with British company Beemcar, in order to develop an environmentally-friendly, driverless system of pods that would operate above the city traffic.
The system, described as “a cross between a monorail and a ski lift,” would see electric pods seating four passengers each traveling at 50 kilometers per hour along routes stretching almost 50 kilometers through Dubai’s busiest districts.

In an exclusive interview with Arabian Business, Beencar CEO, Robin Brownsell, says that he is confident that the transport system will go live “in the next three to four years”
The venture fits into Dubai’s ambitious plans to become the world’s most futuristic city by 2030, which involves ambitious milesstones like having 25 percent of journeys in the city to be made via driverless transport, as well as increasing the proportion of journeys made by public transport.
