Apple has sent fanboys into a tizzy, sending out invitations to a ‘mystery’ new launch on September 10.
The company tends to unveil iPhones in the first weeks of September, and so the smart money is that Apple’s CEO Tim Cook will pull the wraps off some new iPhones.
This will make for an interesting launch event. Not just because there are three new models expected, but that Apple has increasingly moved towards selling digital content and services (over flogging new gadgets).
Still, there will be a host of improvements in the new iPhones. You can expect better processing power, extra camera capabilities and 5G network support. Don’t expect any big design changes though; all reports suggest the new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 XS and iPhone 11 XR will look mighty similar to last year’s models.
According to Cook, Apple had “the biggest June quarter ever, driven by all-time record revenue from services, accelerating growth from wearables, strong performance from iPad and Mac and significant improvement in iPhone trends”.
That said, iPhone sales are actually down 12 per cent from last year (at US$26-billion).
The high-end smartphone market is heating up ahead of the festive shopping period. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and Google’s Pixel 4 are also on the cards for a release over the next month or two. Not to mention Huawei’s new mystery Google-free device and even rumours of a new Motorola Moto Razr.
