With the unbearably hot months nearly upon us, one must come to terms with having to take refuge in the air conditioned confines of your place of residence. Sure, you could sprawl out on your couch and flip between Instagram, TikTok, and the weather app for several hours all weekend, or you could tune in to your trusty pal Netflix and, hopefully, leave with an elevated sense of wonder.
Here are the hottest new shows, films, and more, coming to UAE Netflix for the month of May.
A Man In Full
Series (May 2)
Naturally, we are pumped that Tom Wolfe’s last great novel of the same name finally got it’s cinematic adaption (if only The Bonfire of the Vanities got a proper redo now, as the stench of De Palma’s version has finally worn off). A Man in Full sees Jeff Daniels starring as real estate mogul, Charlie Croker, tussling with bankruptcy and political destruction, as he struggles to protect his empire from the vultures hoping to capitalise on his fall from grace. The 6-episode series is directed by Regina King, and the book is a whopping 742 pages, but don’t let it intimidate you – it’s great.
Bridgerton: Season 3 part 1
Series (May 16)
Determined to rekindle his friendship with Penelope, Colin proposes to mentor her in hopes of boosting her confidence in her pursuit of a husband. However, as his guidance yields unexpected results, Colin finds himself questioning whether his emotions for Penelope are solely platonic. They never learn, do they.
Heermandi: The Diamond Bazaar
Series (May 1)
The trailer for Bollywood filmmaker Leela Bhansali’s eagerly awaited series has already has 67 million views on YouTube, so that should tell the hype surrounding this new show. The series depicts the world of courtesans in Lahore and the historic red-light district, once a bustling diamond market, in pre-partition India. At its core is the rivalry between Mallikajaan and Fareedan, the daughter of her late adversary, as they vie for control of Heermandi. Set against the tense backdrop of freedom fighters and British authorities, English subtitles will also be available for this gripping new series.
Unfrosted
Film (May 16)
Jerry Seinfeld returns! And this time with his very own directorial debut, telling a fictional story of a time when milk and cereal viciously competed for the soul of the American breakfast table. With a cast of Bill Burr, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant, Melissa McCarthy and, naturally, Seinfeld himself, this show will (hopefully) remind you of a time when comedy still meant something.
Atlas
Film (May 24)
J.Lo plays a data analyst with a cemented distrust of artificial intelligence. After she accompanies a mission to capture a rogue robot with which she shares a past, naturally, things don’t go to plan, and the only hopes of saving the future of humanity is to trust it. J.Lo was very upset that she wasn’t Oscar nominated for her role in Hustlers, so perhaps this’ll be the one that gets there (or maybe she can just take one of Ben’s).
The Final: Attack on Wembley
Documentary (May 8)
If you were in London in 2020, you’ll be familiar with this story already, but to refresh your memory, this documentary revisits the disastrous chaos of the 2020 Euro cup final between the UK and Italy, when 6,000 fans stormed Wembley Stadium. This should serve as a reminder of what happens when you forcibly lock people indoors for too long, only to give them a hometown football match and oceans of beer upon release.
