Netflix really isn’t pulling any punches with its hot streak of new releases and announcements.
Recently, the big red N seems to have been doling out shows and full-length features by the dozen. Inevitably, a lot of it is noise. (I had the distinct displeasure of seeing Ibiza, and it was so bad, it might actually be harmful.) But every so often, Netflix actually gives us a good reason to be excited.
This time, it’s a modern incarnation of the original tokusatsu superhero: Ultraman.
While it’s billed as an Original Series, Netflix’s Ultraman is actually an anime adaptation of a recent Ultraman manga by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi, which follows the story of Shinjiro Hayata, son of the original Ultraman.
The upcoming anime will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Shinji Aramaki of Appleseed Alpha. Netflix’s current synopsis for the series reads, “An action drama centered around a man possessing the spirit and DNA of the legendary hero “Ultraman” as he wears a metallic ultra suit and fights against evil.”
Not much else has been revealed about the series, except that it’s slated for a worldwide release in 2019.
