Video: The hunt for Dubai's Best Burger
The humble burger is no longer a guilty pleasure; it’s a right.
But that doesn’t mean the world of bun-based foodstuffs is not without its fair share of debate.
While everyone agrees that gourmet burgers are absolutely the way to go, what goes in them is a matter of fierce opinion.
Beef or chicken (or lamb!)? Fried onions or fresh? And where does the humble egg sit in the delicious mix?
There’s more combinations of burger than there are minutes in the day, however the condiments that command the biggest debate are surely ketchup vs mayonnaise.
Which wins? Well, somewhere down the line the collective consciousness that is society deemed that burgers go with ketchup. Whether squeezed from Heinz packets, or smacked with the heel of your hand from a Heinz bottle on a lightly toasted bun – that’s just how it is.
But should it be?
A few humble foodies have decided that by drenching burgers with ketchup actually masks the flavor of grilled meat. Just ask Alvin Cailan, host of First We Feast’s The Burger Show, who describes the concentrated tomato flavor mixture with sugar and vinegar of being “too much for a burger.” Mayonnaise, on the other hand, "magnifies the flavours of the beef and the cheese."
And if you need further proof, look no further than one of the most celebrated burger chains in the world – Shake Shack. It has been serving patties with a secret sauce (that is certainly more mayonnaise than anything else) for more than a decade.
Yet, despite all the facts there will still be some who dispute that clearly, Mayonnaise is better on burgers than ketchup. And those people, should probably watch the video above.
