Canon EOS 80D video review | Tech Talk
The 80D has been around since 2016. But considering it has now become the professional vloggers camera of choice, we decided it was worth another look from a pure video perspective.
The reason why this camera is so well-thought of amongst the influencer and vlogging communities, is simple – the autofocus. It has lightening quick autofocus, that is ridiculously sharp. That means you can pull the thing out, point it at just about anything you need to, and more often than not it will provide you with crystal clear footage.
To put it simply, the 80D gives you such advanced focusing tools that you'd be hard pressed to get an out-of-focus shot with it. Add that to the fact that it takes big, detailed stills, and has built-in Wi-Fi and NFC – not to mention a boat-load of other clever features – and you have a pretty compelling all-round package.
As far as video goes, it doesn't have 4k shooting just yet. But unlike the previous 70D model, it does do full HD at sixty frames per second, and that's a welcome addition to anyone wanting to shoot a semi-professional YouTube video.
Under the hood lies a 24.2 APS-C sensor, that is capable of digging up plenty of detail in shots. Noise is very well controlled for most of the ISO range, and that's down to Canon's high-end DIGIC six processor.
Another reason why this camera is so well-thought of among the creator community is the screen. It is big and beautiful, and capable of swivelling a full 360-degress – so you can ogle yourself in selfies and check your hair while YouTubeing.
As you'd expect from a camera with this much technology under the hood, it's a little on the large size. But big or not, it's a great camera to hold.
All in all, the Canon 80D has superb image quality especially when shooting video. The Wi-Fi and NFC features are clever and useful, and the swivelling touchscreen is the icing on top of the digital cake. And while it's bigger than your average point-and-shoot camera, its excellent autofocus skills more than make up for that.
In short, it's no surprise that this camera is favoured by just about every YouTuber out there.
