In the middle of his ‘Motherland’ tour of Africa, it seems that former undefeated, multi-belt winning world champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. just got a little spendy, allegedly dropping $7 million, flanked by security guards, on a trip to a Gucci store in South Africa.
It’s a move that has, unsurprisingly, attracted criticism around the world, not that it’s the first time ‘Money’ Mayweather has come under fire for his lavish lifestyle. In fact just three months ago the 46 year old had to come out and officially deny that he’d spent $1 million on a diamond-encrusted hat. The question is, just how do you go about spending $7m at Gucci in the first place?
While the luxe design house is known for its hefty price tags, records show that the 10 most expensive items ever sold by the brand range from a pair of Gucci Princetown loafers at $2,600 to a Gucci Stuart Harris belt coming in at an eye-watering $250k. But even if you bought the entire top 10, you’d still have to spend $6,608,960 more to hit the great man’s $7m mark. The guy clearly has talent.
Mayweather has come in for wider criticism during the Motherland tour, billed as a chance for fans in Zimbabwe and South Africa to meet, greet and even dine with the boxing legend. But a lot of fans allegedly feel that Mayweather is only there because of a big pay day—in Zimbabwe they chanted, “Mayweather mbinga” (Mayweather the rich guy).
The former undisputed world champion has been retired from professional boxing since 2017, although that final fight was against the UFC star Conor McGregor, with no belts on the line.
Since then Mayweather has controversially been on the exhibition boxing circuit, picking up large sums of cash to fight the likes of Youtube star, Logan Paul. In May 2022, he took on his former sparring partner Don Moore in Abu Dhabi, while six months later he beat the Youtuber Deji Olatunji at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena.
Earlier this year Mayweather claimed, while commentating on a bout in the UAE that Saudi could be next for him. “Boxing is growing in Saudi Arabia,” he said. “I had the chance to go to Saudi five or six years ago, and we talked about fighting there.” Before cryptically adding, “Actually, I believe I am fighting in Saudi Arabia, also.”
