For Nicky Van Der Walt, hospitality is not just his profession—it’s his passion. The entrepreneur was drawn to the industry from a young age, opening opened his first restaurant in Johannesburg when he was just 20, feeling that he knew better than most how to create desirable experiences.

The launch of Tang in 2021 marked a defining chapter—a concept that brings together refined design and elevated Asian-inspired cuisine. Its success in South Africa paved the way for international expansion, with Tang opening in Dubai last December with the world’s tallest building as its backdrop. Ready to capitalise of its momentum, Van Der Walt already has plans for expansion into Bodrum, UK and Saudi Arabia.

In many ways, Tang’s refined luxury aesthetic is an extension of his personal one. He collects Swiss watches, has a thing for classic cars, and even produces his own Provençal-style rosé—with a Bordeaux blend on the way. He’s also a semi-retired polo player, though he admits: “You never really quit polo… I’ll probably relapse soon.”

Style-wise, he is intentionally understated. “I gravitate toward a monochrome palette: black denim and a black T-shirt are my everyday essentials,” he says. “I have over 50 black T-shirts in my wardrobe—it’s become something of a uniform, allowing me to focus on what matters most without distraction.”

Even outside of work, the aesthetic stays consistent. “A black suit with a black shirt is my go-to for a more formal look, though I occasionally switch to a light grey shirt for subtle contrast. It’s a clean, understated aesthetic that reflects my preference for classic choices over trends.”

Black, he says, is more than just a colour. “It’s a statement. It’s timeless and always appropriate. There’s a quiet power in black; it removes distraction and allows personality, presence, and purpose to come forward. It reflects how I approach design and hospitality —with intention, clarity, and a focus on the essentials.” While he occasionally adds shades of grey into the mix, he maintains that black offers “the perfect canvas—much like the atmosphere we create at Tang: bold, elegant, and uncompromising.”

His style inspirations are rooted in minimalism and precision. “I’m drawn to clean lines, quality fabrics, and pieces that speak through subtlety rather than statement. Sartorial style plays a big role in my aesthetic—refined, timeless, and precise.”

He also has a thing for suits. “In the right environment, they’re unmatched in their ability to convey confidence. A perfectly tailored suit is like great design: it should feel effortless, fit flawlessly, and express who you are without saying a word.”

His very first outfit? A pair of Levi’s 501s and, of course, a black Calvin Klein T-shirt. Simple and classic. “Looking back, it really set the tone for my style today: clean lines, quality basics, and a strong sense of identity through simplicity.” He still has that outfit to this day, as a reminder of where it all began.

While Tang can’t help but continue to make waves, don’t expect Van Der Walt to chase the trends. “Bucket hats, monogrammed clothing, tweed, or anything overly dandy just isn’t me. I gravitate toward a more sartorial style—clean, tailored, and classic.”
