New statue of Melania Trump is terrifying tourists in Slovenia
Melania Trump is the First Lady of the United States, a fact that – naturally – her hometown of wanted to celebrate. And celebrate that fact it did.
The town has just raised a statue of Melania Trump, and that statue is already making news headlines. Not because of its likeness to the first lady (or lack thereof) and more because it is an exceedingly haunting statue that you can’t unsee.
Carved using a chainsaw, the work was commissioned by American artist Brad Downey and cut from a tree by local artist Ales Zupevc.
While the statue was originally set up in the countryside as a means of honouring Melania and attract tourists to the sleepy town, it seems to be scaring more people away.
The carved wooden figure features two reptilian eyes, tightly-knit eyebrows, a grimacing mouth (is it screaming?) and what looks to be a third eye on its cheek?
In the image, she is wearing a blue coat. One that looks eerily familiar to the one that she wore to Trump’s inauguration.
The artist told Reuters that he wanted to “have a dialogue” with the political situation revolving around the political situation, although other evidence (from an exhibition of Downey’s work) points to the fact that this might just be “a slapstick prank”.
This isn’t the first terrible likeness unveiled to honour a celebrity. It joins the ranks of Cristiano Ronaldo, which has since been re-cast, as well as Mo Salah, which looks more like Art Garfunkel that the Egyptian footballer.
Last month James Corden played a prank on David Beckham based around the unveiling of a new LA Galaxy statue, you can see it below.
