-The Influencers - Rami Rasamny
Trading in a day-job as an chain smoking lawyer to go and climb mountains sounds like an unrealistic pipedream, but that is exactly what Rasamny did. The founder of adventure community Life Happens Outdoors, he now leads climbing and hiking expeditions around the world, encouraging people to embrace their adventurous spirit, using his life as the inspiration.
How important a role does Social Media play in your life?
It enables me to do things that I wouldn’t have been able to do previously. One of the biggest things I do with my mountaineering is fundraising. Over the course of the last four years, we’ve raised more than US $50,000 for underprivileged children through my climbing and social media is a way to carry that message.
What makes you stand out?
I don’t know if I am that different. I’m a mountaineer and I do what I do because I love it and if people think me worthy of following my journey then it’s my honour.
Is there a message you try and give to your followers?
In my early 20s I was 110 kilos and a chain smoker with a very poor lifestyle that I’m not proud of today but it’s a part of who I am so I don’t hide it. I feel that I was lucky to have found something that allowed me to transform and get out of that downward spiral. I feel everyone can reach that watershed moment and I want to help be an example of that, whether it’s via direct advice or using climbs to help children. That is what I hope to achieve with my influence.
What’s next for 2019?
This year is a big one for me, I am going to climb my first 8,000 metre mountain — Gasherbrum in Pakistan — in June with five other mountaineers. It’s going to be a real test for myself, it’s a five-day expedition and I’ve never done anything this long or this high.
