The two-and-a-half minutes it took to watch the trailer for the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, was enough to catapult actor Rami Malek into the A-list.
The 37-year-old Arab American is best known for his lead role as Elliot Alderson in the hit TV series Mr Robot, for which he won a Critic’s Choice Award and Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a drama series.
But while he has built a useful career in Hollywood, it is his role as the lead singer of the British rock band Queen that has put him as an early front-runner for Oscar contention.
Malek, who was born in Los Angeles and the son of a former Cairo tour guide and later door-to-door insurance salesman. He now carries the torch as being one of very few Arab actors to have achieved mainstream success in American show business.
His Emmy win was widely covered by news outlets in the Middle East and was the subject of a congratulatory statement by the Washington-based Arab American Institute.
Late last year, a video of him speaking Arabic went viral on social media and was shared millions of times throughout the region, and with Bohemian Rhapsody being released later this year, his stock is very much on the rise.
Or, as Freddie once sung: “Buddy, you’re a boy. Make a big noise.”
