John Wick 3 director says new Matrix movie in the works
- According to director Chad Stahelski, there is a new Matrix movie being put together by Warner Bros.
- The film takes place 20-years after Neo' first outing
- The film will once again be helmed by the Wachowskis with Keanu Reeves returning to play the titular character
- Michael B. Jordan is rumoured to also star, with Avenger's writer Zach Penn working on the script
Sure, the John Wick franchise lets Keanu Reeves kick as much ass as humanly possible. But let's be honest, what we all really want is to see him plug back into The Matrix, right?
Well, according to John Wick: Chapter 3 director Chad Stahelski, that may finally be happening, and we're ready to say "whoa."
Rumors emerged back in March of 2017 that a Matrix reboot was on the table at Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter. Their sources said that Michael B. Jordan was being eyed to star in the film, with Avengers screenwriter Zak Penn working on the script.
There was one gigantic caveat though: the powerhouse creative team behind the franchise, The Wachowskis, apparently had nothing to do with the new production. That would be like rebooting The Godfather without Francis Ford Coppola. Their pivotal 1999 film changed the game for Hollywood, and ushered our culture into the 21st century, rewriting the code of the zeitgeist with their forward-thinking and digitally-savvy technofuturistic perspective of America's growing internet basement culture.
But, contrary to previous reports Stahelski let slip in a recent interview that the Matrix reboot is happening and The Wachowskis themselves, apparently, are onboard. Here's what he said:
I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved, and if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.
At this point, all of this is speculation, as an official announcement is yet to be made. Stahelski told Yahoo! that he's not even sure if Lana Wachowski will be on the project as a director, and the two have hinted at retirement recently, as they put their studios on the market back in October 2018.
At 20 years old, The Matrix, like Keanu Reeves himself, has aged incredibly. It stands as a masterpiece of action cinema, but also an enduring meditation on the philosophical quandaries that we may encounter in times to come. Since Keanu is still kicking ass onscreen, there may still be a chance to see him don the black trenchcoat and little sunglasses again—and lets hope that, this time, he can get a proper farewell, after the horrible Matrix Revolutions disaster.
