-The Style Directory - Hugo Boss

Hugo Boss was started way back in 1923, and a few minor management changes (and one big war they don’t talk about) aside, has been a staple of the menswear scene for almost a century.
The brand most recently decided to spin off a new division, simply dubbed HUGO. While Hugo Boss remains the parent company and brand, and still produces things like suits (one of its best-known sartorial influences), HUGO specializes in more edgy looks like streetwear.

The history of Hugo Boss
When it was founded, Hugo Boss mainly produced clothes for laborers, including overalls, raincoats and uniforms. During the lead-up to World War II, it became the principle supplier to the German Army – and when that didn’t go the way the country had wanted it to – in 1948 went back to making uniforms for postal and police workers.
It produced the first men’s suits a few years after that, and continued producing mainly workwear all the way up to the 1970s, when – after many changes in management – Jochen and Uwe Holy (the grandchildren of the original Hugo Boss) took control. The duo decided to make the brand more fashion conscious, and turned it from a work-wear manufacturer to a stylish menswear brand.
Family control ended in 1992, when Italian company Mazzotto took control of Hugo Boss AG. It expanded the brand to more than 100 countries, and pushed into additional segments such as cosmetics, eyewear, shoes and fragrances.

Hugo Boss – the company’s core brand – has a mix of sub-brands, including Black Label (business and leisure wear, suits) Orange Label (more urban sportswear) and Green Label (outoorwear, golfwear). HUGO was spun off most recently, and does more edgy looks based around streetwear.
